On Friday September 7 we had the great opportunity to experience a production created uniquely for Girona en Moviment, in the auditorium of La Mercè Cultural Center of Girona.

The talent of four international dancers and the Italian musical group ASSURD were united in this world premiere of the live music and dance performance, La Piazza.

The magic of everyday discovery was reproduced on the stage with the poetry and charm of traditional Italian music played live by the visceral singing of ASSURD. In the hands of the fantasy of the well-known choreographer Mauro Bigonzetti, the interaction between singers and dancers set the line of the show that advanced naturally through the sensitive expression of emotions.

The action was set in any town square, where the magical spider web of spontaneous interactions seduced the public into the possible stories of the characters.

With a spectacular level of artistry, the performers offered a touching experience that conveyed the spectator to a true town party in southern Italy.

Lorella Monti, Enza Prestia and Cristina Vetrone are the members of ASSURD, a musical group that was born in 1993 and retakes the songs and music of the popular traditions of southern Italy. With their powerful voices, passionate temperament and expressive body language, the musicians perform popular songs and dances from Naples and the rural areas of Campania, Calabria, Apulia and Basilicata. The singers are accompanied by accordion and Italian traditional percussion instruments.

During their long history, they have been present in the most prestigious festivals of traditional and popular music in Switzerland, Sardinia, Catalonia, Corsica, France, Italy, Turkey and Spain. Their work is characterized by a fusion of musical potentialities, which brings together colourful harmonies and the symbolic meaning of the cultural and emotional values of Southern Italy. The themes of the songs range from social protest to love serenades.

Assurd’s most significant experiments are probably those related to dance: Serenata, Cantata and Alice, by choreographer Mauro Bigonzetti. They have worked with the Gulbenkian Ballet and the National Ballet of Portugal, (Portugal), Aterballetto (Italy), Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal (Canada), and Gauthier Dance and Theater Dortmund (Germany).
